“My guess is that most people in Center City Philadelphia where I work and live aren’t deeply driven by the question of how they might possibly be reconciled to a righteous and holy God.” – Isn’t that the heartbreaking truth. Contemporary culture moves so fast, and leaves so little time for contemplation, that I doubt most people ask questions at all. And with consumerism, which aims right at the gaping maw in every human soul and lies to it, tells it that THIS THING WILL FULFILL YOU, is so all-pervasive. What a glorious thing that God is bigger than this, you know? That he can, as Alan preached today, “break through with resurrection power”?

Scott, thank you. I'm familiar with the "consumer self" and the attempt to find identity through it. You have given this false thing a name. At least it is the first time I've heard it.
Yes, to all you have said and a thousand times yes. It is always a comfort to be reminded that God in Christ knows me completely from the depths of my deep psyche and spirit and out through the finger tips. You have also touched a nerve with the longing for home. To be known and loved for who I am feels like home. I have just discovered your blog. It is wonderful! Pat
